Answer

For the 2024 tax year (returns filed in 2025), the standard federal deadlines for filing tax returns and requesting extensions are as follows:

1. Individual Income Tax Returns (Form 1040)

  • Standard Due Date: April 15, 2025.
  • If you use a fiscal year, the due date is the 15th day of the fourth month after the end of your fiscal year.
  • Extension: You may file Form 4868 to request an automatic 6-month extension, moving the filing deadline to October 15, 2025. Note that this extension is for filing the return only; any tax owed is still due by April 15, 2025.

2. Partnerships (Form 1065) and S Corporations (Form 1120-S)

  • Standard Due Date: March 15, 2025 (for calendar year filers).
  • For fiscal year filers, the due date is the 15th day of the third month after the end of the tax year.
  • Extension: File Form 7004 for an automatic 6-month extension.

3. C Corporations (Form 1120)

  • Standard Due Date: April 15, 2025 (for calendar year filers).
  • For fiscal year filers, the due date is the 15th day of the fourth month after the end of the corporation’s tax year. If the fiscal year ends June 30, the due date is the 15th day of the third month after the end of the tax year.
  • Extension: File Form 7004 for an automatic extension. For most corporations, the extension is 6 months. For C corporations with a fiscal year ending June 30, the extension is 7 months.

4. Other Common Returns

  • Form 941 (Quarterly Payroll Tax): Last day of the month following the end of the quarter (e.g., April 30, July 31, October 31, January 31).
  • Form 1099 (Information Returns): Most due to recipients by January 31, 2025; due to IRS by February 28, 2025 (paper) or March 31, 2025 (electronic), except Form 1099-NEC, which is due to both recipient and IRS by January 31, 2025.

5. Disaster Relief Extensions

  • Mississippi (Hancock, Hinds, Humphreys, Madison, Neshoba, Scott counties): For those affected by storms beginning April 8, 2024, the deadline for returns and payments due between April 8 and November 1, 2024, is postponed to November 1, 2024.
  • Ohio (Auglaize, Crawford, Darke, Delaware, Hancock, Licking, Logan, Mercer, Miami, Richland, Union counties): For those affected by tornadoes beginning March 14, 2024, the deadline for returns and payments due between March 14 and September 3, 2024, is postponed to September 3, 2024.
  • Florida and Georgia (Hurricane Milton): For 2024 returns due in 2025, the deadline is extended to May 1, 2025.

6. Key Points

  • Filing an extension does not extend the time to pay taxes due; payments must be made by the original due date to avoid penalties and interest.
  • If a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the deadline is the next business day.

If you are in a federally declared disaster area, check the IRS website or relevant IRS news releases for specific relief provisions and extended deadlines that may apply to you.

If you need deadlines for a specific form or situation not listed above, please provide more details.
